Royal Mausoleum of Ming Dynasty



Royal Mausoleum of Ming Dynasty is located in the southwest part of Middle Capital, roughly 7 kilometers far from the middle capital. Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang’s parents, brother and sister-in-law as well as his nephew were all buried here. Zhu Yuanzhang was born in a poor family. In 1344, his parents and brother as well as his brother’s wife died successively. At that time, Zhu Yuanzhang was just more than 10 years old. He did not have the ability to bury his family members formally and ceremoniously. After he enthroned to be the first emperor of Ming Dynasty, he reconstructed his parents’ mausoleum once again with the rest materials, which formerly used for construction of Middle Capital. Totally 4 years were taken for this royal mausoleum.

Around the periphery of mausoleum, there are three city walls, and finally formed plane layout that three walls surround the mausoleum. There is an axe going through three walls, and on both sides of the axe, the grand architectures for fete, guard, housing and so on. Nowadays, the corresponding offices are managing its protection. In 1982, it was listed into the second batch of national cultural relic protection units.
