China Academy of Art

Built by educationist Cai Yuanpei and Mr. Lin Fengmian in 1928 under the name of National Academy of Arts, China Academy of Art sits at the bank of West Lake in Hangzhou where is a famous historical and cultural city.

During the tens of years, the academy has moved over ten times and changed several names. Since 1993, China Academy of Art has come into being and retains today. Countless great artists have gathered here, Lin Fengmian, Pan Tianshou, Huang Binhong, Xiao Chuanjiu, Guan Liang , and so on. Seeds of arts were sown and cultivated by them right here. A lot of famous artists also have come here for studying and teaching. It is the first national comprehensive institution of art and the arts educational institutions admitted by the UN.

With the present dean Prof. Xu Jiang, the academy has become one of the most complete and biggest-scale academies of arts in the plastic arts field in China. Covering an area of more than 1000 mu bestriding Hangzhou and Shanghai, there are four districts. Over 6000 students and 500 teachers are there.

Two principle majors include Fine Arts and Designing Arts, both of which have been accredited with authorities for doctors and master’s degree. In the Sculpt College, there are studies for traditional Chinese painting, calligraphy, canvas, print, sculpture, comprehensive arts, new media arts, etc. In the design college, there are industry design, porcelain arts, fashion design, environmental arts, architecture arts, etc.
