Guangdong Museum

Guangzhou Museum is the best place to familiarize with the culture, heritage and history of Guangzhou, a dazzling pearl along the sea in southeast China.

It consists of four parts: Zhenhai Tower Exhibition Area, Art Gallery Exhibition Area,Sanyuanli Anti-British Invasion Museum and Memorial of the March 29th Uprising Headquarters.

By climbing the over 600-year-old Zhenhai Tower , the best-preserved ancient architecture in Guangdong, we can gain a sweeping panorama of the Yuexiu District of Guangzhou. (by the way, this museum was open to the public in 1929).

It is an ideal place to idle away a spare afternoon with your friends or kids. In a word, we can see the history of Guangdong province simply by climbing the 5-storey Zhenhai Tower.

Its 1st floor addresses the terrain of Guangdong and the ancient cities layout. The 2nd floor houses art and artifacts spanning 4,000 BC to 589AD. The 3rd floor houses artifacts from the 7th century onwards. Its 4th floor introduces the culture of the Qing dynasty. Its 5th floor displays relics relating to the opium war. Spending around 1 hour here, we can see the unusual history this picturesque city has underwent.

Canyons here reflect the war-riddle past during the 1940s. Over 23 stone tablets bearing calligraphy works, are highlights.

The Art Museum testifies Guangzhou’s role as a key hub along the Maritime Silk Road. This epic trade route connects China with the world, leaving behind a legacy of silk embroidery, porcelains, paintings and ivory carvings. In addition, we can also have a science class by visiting its Science Exhibition Hall depicting the evolution of the earth. Huge rocks here are eye-catching.

Skip the other two if you are not into history and war.

Located on Wen Ming Road (文明路), Guangdong Provincial Museum was built on the remnants of Sun Yat-sen University It houses 125,000 pieces of relics, of which mostly are local specialties. This museum reveals the culture economy and political history of Guangdong, the powerhouse in southeast China. The outdoor exhibition area displays three steel cannons used by local civilians to resist the British forces' invasion during the Opium War and a giant aerosiderite, which was a very large piece of steel, about 4,000 kilograms, fallen from the sky in Guangdong's Yingde County (英德县) about 300 years ago.
