The Shibati Old Street
In the Yuzhong Peninsular
of Chongqing City, there are two famous streets that only opened to pedestrian, one is the Liberation Stele, and the other is the Shibati Old Street, literally "The Eighteen Steps". The name came from the Ming Dynasty, a fresh water well was here then, and the distance from it to the residential area was just 18 steps of stair. By maintaining the ancient atmosphere, the Shibati Old Street incarnates the people's life in old Chongqing nowadays.
Shibati Old Street
is a path linking the new, prosperous Upper City (hill's top) and the old, rustic Lower City (hill's foot). The street is paved with stone blocks, you'll feel the steps of it are steep and bend as you going upwards.The area around the Shibati Old Street is full of ancient-looking residential houses, the folks here are engaging many kinds of traditional Chinese business. Carpenters, tailors and cake vendors are everywhere. Pretty cats and lovely dogs are sleeping leisurely on the pavement. The Bang Bang (the people who carries goods for customers on the shoulder with a pole) can be seen here too.
