Wangjiang Tower Park

Wangjiang Tower Park

The Wangjiang Tower Park (The Tower of Overlooking the River) is on the south bank of the Jinjiang River in Chengdu. The park has typical scenes of traditional Chinese gardens such as elegant stone fences along ponds and streams, aged trees and beautiful pavilions reflect their images on the water. The Wangjiang Tower is built during Ming and Qing Dynasties in tribute to the poetess Xue Tao from the Tang Dynasty. Before the World War II, the Nationalist Government named the area as Wangjiang Tower Park, thus this became one of the tourist attractions of Chengdu.

Xue Tao was born in Xi'an. When she was a child her father brought her to Sichuan Province. Xue Tao was very clever and diligence in learning everything during her childhood. After her father died, her family was quite poor. By her ability and chance, at the age of fifteen, Xue Tao was enlisted in the imperial musical court. Her poetry and musical talent won the appreciation of some local senior officials, so she could enter many feudal mansions, wrote poems and composed music. Later she became an imperial official also. According to some historical documents, Xue Tao is said to have written 500 poems, but there are about 90 found today. She was the contemporary with many great poets of that era. She was admired by these masters also.

Most of the Wangjiang Tower Park's area is covered by bamboo forest. Xue Tao loves bamboo very much, because she thinks that the plant represents diligence and austerity. In memory of the poetess, her admirers built a forest of different kinds of bamboo. In later time, the park was known as "Bamboo Park". Nowadays, the park planted about 150 kinds of bamboo, some of which are imported varieties from Japan and some Southeast Asian countries.

The Wangjiang Tower is the tallest architecture in the park, which was built in the fifteenth year of reign of Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty. It has a height of 39 m with four levels. Delicate craftworks of human and animal figures are mounted on each ridge of every level of the tower.

Zaijin House (House of Washing Brocade in Jinjiang) near the Wangjiang Tower is shaped like a boat. The house is built in memory to Xue Tao's farewell to her close friend Yuan on a boat. The grave of Xue Tao is in the park also

The Xue Tao Well is an interesting place also, because the well is used by the poetess to make papers, which she is invented. The Xue Tao Paper is very brilliant in color (sometimes in red) and much superior in quality to the traditional yellow and coarse paper used at that time.
