Dujiangyan Irrigation Project of China

Dujiangyan Irrigation Project of ChinaThe city of

Chengdu

has always been praised as the "Heavenly State". The reason is the

Dujiangyan Irrigation Project

. It was completed in the year of 256 BC and considered one of the oldest and largest non-dam irrigation projects in the world. The marvelous water conservancy work is located in the western part of Dujiangyan City near Chengdu.

The Dujiangyan project consists out of three sub-projects : Yuzui (Fish Mouth) watershed divides the Dujiang River into two parts - Inner and Outer Rivers, Feisha (Flying Sand) Spillway transfers sands and stones from Inner River to Outer River and Baopingkou (Bottle Neck) controls the flowing water amount, as well as the auxiliary projects of Baizhang and Renzi Banks. The

Dujiangyan Irrigation Project

has successfully transformed the western Sichuan Basin from a dry land into fertile land. It took advantage of the geographical situation in the region - higher altitude in the northwest and lower in the southeast. Also, based on the location of the natural river, artificial paths were designed to flow the water to irrigate the farmland successfully, without a dam to control the flow. It integrates the functions of irrigation, embankment, flood discharging and sand ejection as a whole. Up till 1998, the irrigation area by the Dujiangyan Project has reached a total of 668,700 hectares.

The greatness of the project is that it still gives benefits to the region nowadays. The building of such a gigantic water conservation project does not damage the natural environment in the area, thus makes man, land and water coexist in harmony.

The Dujiangyan project's beneficial effect expands gradually because of great progresses in scientific technology. Since 1936, some new projects have been made, as well as repairs and reinforcements by means of new techniques. In 2000 the United Nations enlisted the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project into the World Cultural Heritage.

Apart from the main Dujiangyan site, there are a lot of beautiful scenery and cultural heritage such as Fulongguan Temple, Erwang Temple and Anlan Rope Bridge.
